Carroll County receives Lincoln portrait

Carroll County Circuit Judge Val Gunnarsson, third from left, and Carroll County retired judge Richard “Dick” DeMoss, right, unveil a 30-by-40 inch portrait of Abraham Lincoln on Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, in the main courtroom at the Carroll County Courthouse. Also pictured are Whiteside County retired judge John Hauptman, left, and Carroll County Associate Judge Jerry Kane. The high-quality reproduction was one of the last images taken of Lincoln while he was a practicing attorney. The photo, taken in 1860 by photographer Alexander Hessler, is being given to all 102 courthouses across Illinois, thanks to the Illinois State Historical Society, in celebration of the state’s bicentennial. The Illinois Judges Association and the Illinois Sate Bar Association, along with their respective foundations, donated to the project.
