Savanna Veterans Memorial has been selected as the official name for the new memorial site at the north entrance to Savanna.
Since mid-April the Savanna Veterans Memorial Committee has been soliciting ideas from the community regarding potential names for its new memorial site.
According to Savanna Memorial Committee member Dave Engaldo, seven names were submitted during this period by members of the community for the committee's consideration.
Four were variations on the same basic name: Savanna Veterans Memorial Park, Savanna Veterans Memorial, Memorial Park and Savanna Veterans Monument.
Two other related names also were presented: Patriot's Park and Patriot's Point.
One additional name, Defenders of Freedom Park, was also proposed.
In addition, several residents wrote or called to express their opinion that the name should not include the word "park." Instead, these individuals expressed the view that the veteran's site should be regarded as a "memorial" rather than a "park."
The Savanna Veterans Memorial Committee at its May meeting discussed the naming of the site, including all the submissions and suggestions offered by community members, and settled unanimously on the name Savanna Veterans Memorial for its new site name.
“The committee would like to offer its thanks to local residents for their interest and continued support of the Savanna Veterans Memorial,” said Engaldo.
Construction is underway once again on the new memorial and the oversight committee hopes that the site will be largely complete by November, with the official dedication slated for Memorial Day, May 25, 2020.
The committee plans to keep the community updated on its progress throughout the summer through the Savanna Times-Journal, other area newspapers, radio and its website, www.savannaveteransmemorial.org.
