Late-night blaze destroys home

This two-story frame house at 603 E. Washington St. in Mount Carroll has been declared a total loss after a fire broke out around 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 29. Fire Chief Marty Hockman said one adult and one child who were in the house at the time of the fire were able to get out safely. Their names were unavailable as was the name of the owner of the house. A detached garage to the south also was damaged. A state fire marshal was on the scene and said the cause of the fire was undetermined, Hockman said, adding it is believed the blaze originated in the northeast corner of the house. Fire departments from every community in Carroll County along with Stockton provided mutual aid, and the Mount Carroll Ambulance also was on the scene. “It was a defensive battle right away,” Chief Hockman said about fighting the fire. “Everyone did an excellent job.”
