Eight local and area fire departments battled a barn fire between Mount Carroll and Savanna in extremely windy conditions Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6.
The Mount Carroll Fire Department was called at 1:31 p.m. to the Julius, Barbara and Rebecca Dauphin farm at 12766 U.S. 52, about two miles east of Savanna.
Mount Carroll Fire Chief Marty Hockman said the barn and 250-275 round bales stored in the barn were destroyed.
No additional structures and no farm equipment were damaged, said Chief Hockman.
Cause of the blaze is blamed on spontaneous combustion, Hockman said.
Other fire departments responding to the blaze were Savanna, Thomson, Lanark, Chadwick, Milledgeville, Shannon and Stockton. Firefighters remained on the scene for eight hours.
Mount Carroll Ambulance crew members stood-by at the fire. No emergency personnel were injured, Hockman said.
Colgan and Sons of Savanna was called to removal the large bales with an excavator.
