The 2018 Carroll County Pheasants Forever Longspurs trapshooting team will be starting its new season the first week of April.

There will be an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Manny’s Pizza in Savanna.

The Scholastic Clay Trapshooting Program is a nationally sponsored youth organization that encourages academics, community service and marksmanship. Grades three through 12 participate in age group and experience group shooting sports.

This is all done under the watchful eye of NRA certified shotgun instructors Brock Wackerlin, Greg Harmston, Mike Haring, and Thom Casey.

The Longspurs are looking for interested individuals, both boys and girls, from ages 8 through 18 who want to learn how to trapshoot. Safety is stressed and equipment is available or instructors will provide recommendations for purchasing equipment for the new and more advanced shooters.

The Longspurs were started in 2008 by James Wackerlin, Thom Casey, Greg Harmston, Dan Hartman and 20 very energetic young shooters. Since then the Longspurs have participated in dozens of state level competitions and over 10 national competitions.

The shooters have scored numerous top three team and individual scores at the different age levels. Individual national champions also have come from the Longspurs team.

Graduates of the program are still involved in the firearms industry as a master gunsmith, a shooting sports editor and a pre-Olympic shooter on college scholarship.

The 2017 season was very successful with many Longspurs shot their best ever or their first 25 or 50 straight. The season culminated at the national trapshooting at the Cardinal Center in Ohio against almost 3,000 other competitors.

Interested persons are encouraged to attend the Feb. 28 meeting. For more information, call head coach Brock Wackerlin at 815-291-6360.
