The West Carroll School Board saw several changes last week following the April 2 consolidated election.
Before the school board's regular monthly meeting held Tuesday, April 23, a re-organizational meeting was held to elect officers, set meeting times and administer the oath of office to newly re-elected members Dawn Rath and Shay Bradbury.
The board also bid farewell to president Jerry Anderson of Savanna, who served eight years on the school board.
Supt. Julie Katzenberger presented Anderson with a plaque, thanking him for his time and service during his two terms.
Board member Bev Kilpatrick said that when she first met Anderson, she was initially intimidated by him. However, she said that the past eight years working with him has developed a pretty "harmonious" relationship between them and has been a "real pleasure."
"It has been a real pleasure to serve with you all," Anderson said.
West Carroll Primary School teacher Angela Kamper thanked Anderson for his years of service on the board during the public comment portion of the meeting. She pointed out that he was there for his last meeting on what he revealed was also his wedding anniversary. Kamper said that was an example how much dedication all of the board members have while working for the district.
"Life is going on and you're still here," Kamper said.
While making a presentation on what the West Carroll Sports Boosters have accomplished this school year, Laura Shelly thanked Anderson for his time on the board as well as all of his involvement in student athletics. She presented him with West Carroll Thunder sweatshirt.
"You will be missed," Shelly said.
After the oath of office and Anderson's departure from the meeting, the school board held an election of officers.
Following nominations from Kilpatrick, the board unanimously elected John McIntyre president, Jessica Edwards vice president and Kilpatrick secretary.
The board approved holding regular meetings at 5:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month, rather than the third Monday.
With Anderson's departure from the board and no one elected to fill his seat, the board has a vacancy for the District 4 seat in Savanna. The board is seeking applicants for the position.
Anyone interested in filling the position must be a U.S. citizen of at least 18 years old who has lived within District 4 of the West Carroll School District for at least one year. Candidates must not be a convicted sex offender, hold an incompatible public office, be a school trustee or hold specific types of prohibited Federal or State employment.
The board will accept applications for the vacant seat through Friday, May 10. Candidates will be interviewed, credentials verified, and an appointment made at the May 20 board meeting.
The selected individual will fill the position until the April 2021 election when the seat will be up for election for an unexpired four-year term.
Interested residents of District 4 are asked to send a letter of interest and resume of accomplishments to President John McIntyre, West Carroll District Office, 642 S. East St., Mount Carroll, IL 61053.
Questions can be directed toward Supt. Julie Katzenberger at 815-734-3374.
