It should come as no surprise to anyone living in this community and region, but now it’s official:
Savanna is one of the 10 Best Small Towns for Adventure in the United States.
The community was nominated and made it to the top 20 small towns under 25,000 in the United States for adventure by USA Today.
The poll was a readers’ choice with people voting for their favorite. The top 10 were listed as the 2020 USA Today’s Top 10 Small Towns for Adventure and Savanna ended up being ranked number four, it was announced last weekend.
“I’m so excited that Savanna was recognized on a national level for all that we have to offer,” said Mayor Chris Lain. “It will bring so much positive press to us and it will bring tourism for the entire area.”
Under Savanna’s listing of the Top 10 candidates, the description said, “Savanna, hugging the Mighty Mississippi and along the Bluffs of the Driftless area in Northwest Illinois, is the starting point for 60 miles of bike trails, — the Great River Bike Trail — but it is also a favorite stop for motorcyclists.”
Leading the Top 10 list of Small Towns for Adventure was Beaufort, N.C., followed by Fayetteville, W. Va., Elliottville, N.Y., and Savanna.
The five small towns after Savanna, in descending order, were North Conway, N.H., Sitka, Alaska, Avila Beach, Calif., Spearfish, S.D., Marquette, Mich., and Telluride, Colo.
“I cannot explain how proud it makes me for this great town to be recognized on a national level for all we have to offer,” said Mayor Lain. “What an amazing honor!”
Added the mayor, “We have been working hard to market Savanna regionally and recently Enjoy Illinois started picking up some of our videos for their marketing. Now we will be getting even more free publicity on an even bigger scale. We should all be very proud of this great community.”
ExploreSavanna.com, a City of Savanna sponsored website which promotes the community and the area on social media, said about the Top 10 listing, “We are absolutely honored to be recognized next to other amazing cities. From kayaking, rock climbing, biking, hiking and so much more — we know that Savanna belongs on that list.”
