A groundbreaking ceremony for Savanna’s $5.3 million Wacker Road reconstruction project will be held at noon Friday, June 14, just east of the West Carroll Primary School, near the MacLean-Fogg/Metform building at 2551 Wacker Rd.
Food and refreshments will be served.
The ceremony, being held by the city of Savanna in partnership with MSA Professional Services, Inc., will celebrate upcoming infrastructure renovations to Wacker Road, which serves residential homes, commercial properties, industrial facilities and West Carroll Primary School within the city.
Improvements include a 31-foot-wide, 9-inch concrete roadway, 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk with ADA compliance ramps, storm sewer collection system, water main replacement, sanitary sewer replacement and increased radii to accommodate truck turning movements along the route.
The project also includes reconstruction of intersecting Willow Street and Hickory Street with sidewalks added to improve pedestrian safety as part of the Safe Routes to School program.
Savanna Mayor Chris Lain said the goal is to have substantial completion of the project by the end of November, with full completion by spring 2020. He noted that Elkay and Metform are paying for the majority of the city’s match for the sidewalk grant.
MSA is leading the roadway design for the project, which is funded in part with the acquisition of several state and federal grants.
