Nine minutes after 2019 began, a rural Savanna couple welcomed their son, Frederick Hugo Schau VI — the first baby born in the new year who resides within the West Carroll School District.

Erica Schau, 39, and Frederick "Eric" Hugo Schau V, 42, said they are excited to welcome their second child, named after many of Eric's family, including his great-great-grandfather from Denmark, the first Frederick Hugo Schau.

Erica said she was quite surprised that her son, due Dec. 22, ended up being the first baby born in 2019, to parents living within the West Carroll School District.

"Everyone kept saying I'd have a Christmas baby, but I ended up with a New Year's Baby," Erica said.

After Erica passed her due date by nine days, the couple traveled to Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, so labor could be induced at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31.

Their son was born approximately 16 hours later, at 12:09 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. He weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz. and was 21 inches long.

Erica and Eric, who reside north of Savanna, have been married 17 years. She is a stay-at-home mom and accountant who until recently (Dec. 10, 2018) served as treasurer for the city of Lanark. Eric is an equipment operator at Exelon in Cordova.

They have a three-year-old daughter, Audrey, and Erica said her daughter is already in love with her new brother.

"She's been excited for months," Erica said.

Grandparents include Frederick Hugo Schau IV and Kathy Schau of Brodhead, Wis., and Dennis and Paula Tessendorf, of Lena.
