BIM donation provides flags for Savanna

Beautification in Motion (BIM) has made a fourth donation of American flags to the City of Savanna. The 3-foot by 5-foot flags are heavy duty and made to tolerate strong winds when they fly over the railroad bridges on Viaduct Road. BIM made its first presentation in April 2016 for the Viaduct. BIM also presented flags in March 2017 for the Main Street lampposts and made a $1,000 donation October 2017 toward the purchase of flags for the new Veterans Memorial. Proceeds from BIM’s annual plant and bake sale fund the flag projects. Presenting the flags to Savanna Mayor Chris Lain, left, and Public Works Supt. John Lindeman, right, are BIM members, from left, Karen Nolte, Marcia Dauphin, Rosemary Hartman, Pam Darrow, Bev Grissinger, Heidi David and Dee Bull. BIM is one of four groups participating on Savanna Mapping, a program facilitated by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs and supported by the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Beautification In Motion (BIM) will host a Plant and Baked Good Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at the Outdoor Market Place, north of Shivers Ice Cream, on Main Street in Savanna.

Area citizens are encouraged to donate plants and/or baked goods for this event and extend the invitation to participate to friends, neighbors and family. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

The sale will include house and garden plants, perennials, baked goods and garden art. Plant prices will be determined when donated items are delivered.

Plants and perennials must be potted in sellable containers (plastic solo cups work for small plants, ice cream buckets or milk jugs for larger plants) and labeled with plant name and growing conditions (sun, type of soil, and watering instructions).

Upside down fork and recipe cards work well for labels.

Each donor is asked to package their own baked goods ready to sell. No items requiring refrigeration, please. Baked goods prices will be determined when delivered.

Items may delivered to the event site between 7-8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

For more information, call Bev Grissinger at 815-273-3377 or Karen Nolte at 815-273-3284.

BIM is one of four groups participating in Savanna Mapping, a program facilitated by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs and supported by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

BIM has successfully sponsored a Bench for Caps project, two community-wide litter pickup, three county-wide solid waste collections and annual flower planting in the Welcome to Savanna planters.

Past fundraisers include a quilt raffle or an original pattern entitled Savanna Star, a beverage booth at the Shadfly Festivals and the annual plant and bake sale first held in May 2015.

All proceeds from BIM fundraisers will be used to continue to improve the appearance of Savanna. They have purchased American flags on the Viaduct and Main Street, donated towards flags for the new veterans’ memorial, the Savanna Service Club Adopt-A-Pot program, Val’s Memorial Garden and for mile marker signs along the bike path.
