We all need reminders from time to time. Our minds are like computers. We have so much useless stuff stored in them that our mental cache becomes overloaded and we often forget or take for granted things that are important in our lives.
Let’s be sure we don’t let that happen with the veterans in our families. Now that the Savanna Veterans Memorial is beginning to take shape, be sure you don’t forget to order pavers for all the veterans who have touched your life.
And that begs the question, “Who qualifies as a veteran?” We get that question all the time. The Savanna Veterans Memorial Committee believes a veteran is anyone who is serving or has served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Reserves or National Guard.
Veteran status is not just about wartime service. Everyone who has ever made the commitment to serve and pledged to defend our country is a veteran and deserves to be remembered for following through on that commitment. And vets, seriously, it’s okay to buy yourself a paver.
The other frequently asked question is, “Do you need to be a resident or have been a resident of Savanna to have a paver on the wall?” The answer is an emphatic, NO! You and your family are the link to Savanna.
Any veteran who has touched your life or that of a family member, whether that person ever stepped foot in Savanna or not, may be honored on our paver walls. There will actually be a paver on the wall remembering a vet who fought with George Washington in the Revolutionary War over 200 years ago.
So, how do you get a paver for that special veteran you want to honor? Go to: www.savannaveteransmemorial.org, download a paver form and follow the directions.
Pavers are currently $150, but the cost will rise to $175 on Oct. 1 and the pavers have a long lead time to produce, so don’t delay. You won’t want to miss having your vet’s paver installed before the memorial dedication which is tentatively scheduled for Memorial Day 2020.

Remember to commemorate your loved veterans who served or are serving on our paver wall. The Savanna Veterans Memorial is all about honoring their service. Don’t forget it, you’ll regret it!
