Crash claims Savanna man

Thomas Downing, 40, of Savanna, was killed shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, when his northbound vehicle veered off Illinois 84 three miles north of Thomson, striking an embankment and a tree before overturning. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner’s office.

A Savanna man was killed in a one-vehicle accident around 8:10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, on Illinois 84 south of Three Mile Road, three miles north of Thomson.

Thomas W. Downing, 40, the driver of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s office.

According to a news release from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, Downing was driving the vehicle northbound on Illinois 84 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment before overturning.

The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
