Track legend Floyd “Bud” Smith of Clinton, Iowa, formerly of Mount Carroll, won four medals in the Senior Olympics held June 29 at Augustana College in Rock Island. Smith, 84, competed in the 80-84 age group where he won a third place medal in the shot put and also collected medals in the discus, weight throw (12 lb. weight on a chain) and javelin. A 1954 Mount Carroll High School graduate, Smith, known as “Flying Floyd” in his high jumping days, always wears a Mount Carroll Hawks T-shirt when competing in senior track events. Smith has been competing in track for 64 years and recalls that he won his first track medal in 1951 when he was a freshman at MCHS. Smith said he is looking forward to next year when he will be competing in the 85-90 age group. His wife, Charleen, used to compete in the high jump in senior track events.
