Howard was born June 21, 1942, in Savanna, the son of Vic and Vera (Gillespie) Dauphin. He attended Savanna schools, graduating from Savanna High School with the Class of 1961. On May 5, 1963, Howard married his wife of 56 years, Diane Hafer.
From 1964 to 1988, Howard hauled milk and grain for Hafer Trucking. In 1988, he and Diane started Dauphin Trucking Company, which Howard operated until his retirement in 2006.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Howard loved the outdoors and rarely turned down a good card game with friends. He also valued his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter for the Mt. Carroll Fire Department for 23 years.
The people of Mount Carroll will miss seeing Howard drive his truck around town with his dog Buffy hanging out the window, white fur flowing in the wind. Most of all, Howard loved his family.
Howard will be dearly missed by his wife, Diane; two sons, Darrin Dauphin and Eric Dauphin, both of Mount Carroll; two granddaughters, Lindsay Dauphin and Lauren Dauphin, both of Mount Carroll; brother-in-law Denny Hafer of Mount Carroll; and numerous friends and members of his extended family.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Victor Dauphin.
