MOUNT CARROLL—Gregory Paul Bazilewich, 84, of Mount Carroll, died Thursday, May 26, 2022, at home.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9, at the 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll. The family will be there to greet at 10:30 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. A light luncheon will be served following the service.

Greg was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Monessen, Pa., the son of Russell “Joseph” and Anna Maria (Guffa) Bazilewich. He graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago. He and Karen Ellen Kirwan were married Nov. 19, 1966.

Greg was employed in retail grocery. He was a state official for the Illinois High School Association for over 40 years. He officiated all sports, but enjoyed doing baseball the most. One of his best moments was to actually get to umpire a game at Wrigley Field for a senior men’s team.

He also enjoyed gardening and working at the Mount Carroll Farmers Market for the 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll where he was an active member. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for seven years.

Everybody liked Greg and he will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Mount Carroll; two sons, Guy Bazilewich and Troy (Earlene) Bazilewich, both of Mount Carroll; a daughter, Nicole (Richard) Burke of Florida; eight grandchildren, Colin Bazilewich, Gregory Bazilewich, Dakota Bazilewich, Montana Bazilewich, Whitney Bazilewich, Monique Weingart, Shane Ashlock and Trinity Ashlock; a brother-in-law, Edward Kirwan of Mount Carroll; and a sister-in-law, Judith LaGraw of Two Rivers, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Bazilewich; and a sister, Audrey Kessler.
