MOUNT CARROLL—Barbara Jean (Barb) Nielsen, 75 of Mount Carroll, passed away at Rockford Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. Honoring her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded with a family burial taking place at a later date in South Dakota.

Barbara was born Sept. 25, 1946, at Watertown, S.D., the daughter of Ralph W. and Mildred (Small) Clausen. She attended and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1964. She enrolled at Watertown Lake Area Vocational School, and graduated as an LPN.

She practiced her nursing vocation at the Bartron Clinic in Watertown for several years and also at the Lake Norden Clinic in Lake Norden, S.D. She also managed an arcade at the Watertown Mall and after moving to Arizona with Andy, worked for American Express, both as an employee and as a contractor. She was very involved with anti-domestic abuse causes and groups, during her 16 years as a divorcee and single mother.

She was united in marriage to her husband of 38 years, Andreas (Andy) Nielsen, on Nov. 25, 1983. Her brother, Robert Clausen, administered the Rites of Matrimony. The children of Barb and Andy (Lori, Linda, Douglas, and Kristin) were their attendants.

After 26 years in Arizona, Andy and Barb retired and moved to Mount Carroll in 2010 to remodel their dream home. Barbara loved to listen to Andy sing and play his guitar either solo or with other players. She was often seen at many local establishments enjoying his music. She also loved dancing as well. She enjoyed needlepoint, quilting, diamond art, traveling in the Airstream, and she especially loved her dogs. (Prince, Miffy, Max, Ed, Trixie, Shiloh, Lola, Juju, Ralphie, Tootsie, and Stanley.)

Barbara is survived by her husband, Andy of Mount Carroll; two daughters, Lori (Ron) Davis of Phoenix, Ariz., and Linda (John Burghardt) Eckert of Chandler Ariz.; stepson, Douglas (Cindy) Nielsen of Madison, S.D.; and stepdaughter, Kristen (John) Anthony of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandchildren, Maria Langenfeld, Zach Davis, Emma Eckert, Rick Nielsen, Chris Nielsen, and Sean (Kaylee) Nielsen, and Taylor Anthony; great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Layla, Peyton, Piper, Brook and Rylan; siblings, Betty Feay of Fort Wayne, Ind., Robert Clausen of Fergus Falls, Minn., and William Clausen of Fort Myers, Fla. She also has several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and many cousins.
