ST. ANNE—Carol Jean Barthel, 88, of St. Anne, Ill., passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020, at Miller Health Care in Kankakee.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1931, in Thomson, the daughter of Wallace W. and Helen A. Turnbaugh Ware. She married Lyle M. Barthel on Nov. 22, 1950, in Chadwick. He survives.
Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and William Evans of Elk City, Okla., and Karen and Mark Williams of St. Anne; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Pamela Barthel of Globe, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Shoup of Rockford and Lois A. Kloepping of Mount Carroll.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and one son, David Barthel.
After the death of their son, Lyle and Carol came to know the Lord Jesus as their Savior and gave their lives to serve Him.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Carol assisted Lyle in farming for 17 years in Lanark and German Valley, followed by faithful service with Lyle at the Christian Servicemen’s Center, the Union Ministries, in Norfolk, Va., and as house-parents at Hope Haven Children’s Home in Virginia Beach, Va.
Carol enjoyed sewing, baking, and most of all, sharing the Word of God with children and many others.
Private graveside services were held May 26 at St. Anne Cemetery in St. Anne. The Rev. David McMillan officiated. Due to Covid-19 precautions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
