SPRINGFIELD—Catherine Mitchell Taylor, 95, of Springfield, formerly of Winchester, Ill., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022.
Catherine was born May 3, 1927, in South Jacksonville, Ill., the daughter of Ralph and Lena (Rueter) Mitchell. She attended country schools and graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1945. She married Wilbur Taylor on Aug. 12, 1945, and they celebrated 59 years together before Wilbur passed away in 2004. Catherine was also preceded in death by her parents; a beloved brother, Gerald Mitchell; a granddaughter, Cristin Lipp; and a niece, Sharon Shafer Young, who was raised in their home.
Surviving are her son, Kevin W. (Elaine) Taylor of Springfield, formerly of Mount Carroll; daughter, Carrie (Brent) Lipp of Hannibal, Mo.; grandchildren, Rachael Lipp, and Daniel (Destiny) Lipp; Emily, Michael, and Ryan Taylor; sister-in-law Janet Mitchell; nieces, Amy (John) Hatle, Sandra Reeder, Debbie Floreth; and nephews Justin Mitchell and Brad (Tammy) Floreth.
Catherine first taught in a one-room country school in 1945-46. She later worked as a bookkeeper at the Scott County Farm Bureau and as the secretary to the Superintendent of School and Board of Education in Winchester for 23 years. She also was a dedicated helpmate to her farmer husband through all of those years.
Catherine was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Winchester and served on many boards and committees. She was blessed and enjoyed having many close friends and relatives. She was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday Jan. 6, at the First Baptist Church in Winchester. Burial will be in Winchester City Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday Jan. 5, from 3:30-7 p.m. at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Memorials can be made to the Winchester First Baptist Church.
