SAVANNA—Donna Lou Flack was a loving mother, spouse and caring teacher throughout her life. At the age of 90, Donna passed away Monday, July 29, 2019, at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, followed by a celebration of life service at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Niel Shoffner officiating. Inurnment will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery.
Donna was born March 5, 1929, in Thomson, the daughter of Louis and Ethyl (Shaw) Mickelson. As a youngster, she attended the Tehan Country School and graduated from the Fulton High School in 1946.
Donna attended Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa, then later the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1965.
On Nov. 20, 1948, Donna married Eugene "Gene" Flack. They celebrated 62 lovely years of marriage until Eugene's passing.
Donna worked as a teacher from 1948 to 1984, impacting the lives of many Savanna area students. She continued as a substitute teacher for many years until retiring.
Donna was a member of Savanna Service Club, PEO and Delta Kappa Gamma. She spent many years with the Savanna Jr. Women's Club and was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.
Donna maintained a strong faith, was a natural leader and enjoyed being active within the community. She loved reading, visiting with friends, and traveling with Gene. Most of all, Donna cherished her family, especially her grandchildren.
Donna will be dearly missed by her sons, Todd (Roberta) Flack of Mount Prospect and Clarence (Carol) Flack of Clinton, Iowa; five grandchildren, Isabella, Marisa, Sean, Heather and Corie; one brother, Allan Mickelson of Golconda, Ill.; two sisters, Pam (Kenneth) Brown of Savanna, and Denise (Delbert) Hamilton of Trenton, Ill.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Ethyl; her husband, Gene; sister, Lyla Hoyt; and brother, Gerald Mickelson.
