Dear Editor:

As a mother, teacher, professor, principal and now a superintendent, I can truly say that, "It takes a village to raise a child." This famous African proverb means that an entire community of people must provide for and interact positively with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment.

This week, May 2-6, West Carroll CUSD #314 will be celebrating Staff Appreciation Week district-wide. As educators, we instill confidence in children and encourage students to work hard, persevere and dream boldly.

As a West Carroll community, I am asking for all community members to extend a "Thank you" to school staff in order to express your appreciation and support for all teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, administrators, secretaries, cooks, custodians, directors, technicians, bus drivers and volunteers in the education system.

As a school district, we are very thankful to have been able to have a full year of in-person learning with extra-curricular activities after an unprecedented Covid-19 worldwide pandemic. We are stronger together.

This week, we will be recognizing outstanding students earning scholarships and awards at West Carroll High School. We will also be recognizing student leadership at every building through the Illinois Principals Association Leadership Brunch.

On Friday, May 6, the annual West Carroll Education Foundation Radiothon will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on WCCI radio along with the FFA barnyard zoo at West Carroll Primary School.

Thank you to all of the parents, school board members and stakeholders for their support of the West Carroll School District. Happy Mother's Day!

Supt. Julie Katzenberger
