Dear Editor:

The City of Mount Carroll recently started a Tree Replacement Fund, thus far receiving donations of $3,325 toward our goal of raising $5,000.

A donation to this fund will help buy our community a replacement tree for one taken down due to the ash borer, disease or weather. It will also get a matching donation to the Mount Carroll Community Foundation.

Volunteers — the (Re)Tree(our)City Group — identified 52 replacement locations and species of trees to be planted at those locations. Homeowners with identified locations in front of their houses will be contacted soon and asked to assist the city with the care and maintenance of a newly planted tree. Prepared written instructions will be provided.

McCormick's Nursery will provide the replacement trees to the city. Bonus: Due to our replanting initiatives, they are offering to provide free planting to Mount Carroll homeowners who purchase trees from them for planting on their property. Trees will be delivered and planted on Friday, Oct 16, and guaranteed for a year. This is also the day for the city's Arbor Day Palooza event at the Stone House Memorial Park. Mark your calendar.

Please keep donations coming for the city's Tree Replacement Fund. Send to City Hall, Tree Replacement Fund, 302 N. Main St., Mount Carroll, IL 61053. Help us reach our $5,000 goal.
