Editor’s note — West Carroll Supt. Julie Katzenberger sent the following letter Monday night, Nov. 9, to families and staff in the school district.

Good evening West Carroll Families and Staff:

After consulting with the Carroll County Health Department today regarding the COVID-19 community spread in Carroll County, the West Carroll School District has decided to move to remote learning beginning on Thursday, November 12, 2020 to help in reducing the community spread of the virus.

Tomorrow, November 10, 2020, the district will have in-person instruction as usual. Students should take home their chromebooks in grades two through twelve along with their chromebook chargers at the end of the day tomorrow. Students in kindergarten and first grade will receive instructional materials to take home.

Wednesday, November 11, 2020, is Veteran's Day. There will be no school on Veteran's Day in observance of the federal holiday in the United States to honor military veterans. Thank you to all of the men and women that have served our country.

From Thursday, November 12, 2020 through Tuesday, November 24, 2020, all kindergarten through twelfth grade students attending the West Carroll Schools will be remote learning. Students attending alternative programs will follow their alternative school schedules. Head Start and Early Step Preschool programs will follow their preschool schedules. Learning platforms like Google Classroom and Schoology will be used by teachers during this time.

On Monday, November 16 and Monday, November 23, students will be learning remotely until 11:30 a.m. Monday afternoons will be used for teachers to have time for remote planning. Tuesday through Friday remote learning times will be 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Students in grades seven through twelve should be checking in online every period, every day during remote learning. Once your child signs in, your child should stay on the computer for teacher instruction. If your child does not get online for every class, every day, your child will be marked as unexcused absent which will affect your child's ability to turn in assignments for credit as expected. Please remember that students in grades seven through twelve have seven different classes in a day.

Free breakfast and free lunch for all West Carroll students may be picked up at any school between the hours of 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on remote learning days. Multiple days of food may be picked up at the same time.

Thanksgiving break will be from Wednesday, November 25 through Friday, November 27, 2020.

Students will resume in-person instruction on Monday, November 30, 2020 as half-days of in-person learning with an 11:30 dismissal time. Every Monday from November 30th through December 14, 2020 will be in-person learning half-days. Teachers will be using Monday afternoons during this month as remote learning planning days. More information will be sent home tomorrow with your child by your child's teacher and building principal. Thank you for your continued partnership in education.

Please stay safe and be well!
