Dear Editor:

We have almost achieved our goal. A caring community donor has offered to make a matching donation to the Mount Carroll Community Foundation for every dollar (up to $5,000), donated to the city's newly established Tree Replacement Fund. We now stand at $3,925. But, there is still time for you to help us reach our $5,000 goal.

The (Re)Tree (Our) City group, the volunteers doing the legwork, have been busy. They have already accomplished a great deal:

They applied for and received a $2,000 grant from Trees Forever; identified and marked 53 locations for replacement trees; selected 14 different species of trees to be planted in those locations; provided required information for JULIE (underground utility detector); developed care instructions for homeowners with newly planted trees in front of their homes; and worked with McCormick's nursery to provide free planting to Mount Carroll homeowners who purchase trees from them for planting on their property.

Donation checks, dated Oct. 16 or before, will be eligible for a match. So please keep donations coming for the city's Tree Replacement Fund. Send to City Hall, Tree Replacement Fund, 302 N. Main St, Mt. Carroll, IL 61053.

In closing, please join us at the city's Arbor Day Palooza event at 4 p.m. this Friday, Oct 16, at the Stone House Memorial Park. The Arbor Day tree will be planted and a tour of the Stone House given.
