To fellow veterans, hope all is well with you and your loved ones. This brief communication is to inform you of the need for more involvement by you in veterans’ organizations, if possible.
We are in need of some veterans out there to become members of Savanna VFW Post 2223. People are needed to do things like military rites for funerals, parades, Memorial Day and Veterans Day services, and color guard, since some of the older fellas can’t hold a rifle or have a hard time marching anymore.
It is harder to get a full complement of shooters and flag holders for funerals, on Memorial Day the chairs were more empty than usual, and on the 4th of July there were only four of us marching at the front and the colors should always lead.
We also do other things in the community, such as scholarships, “Vet talks” at the primary school, help with Boy/Cub Scouts on things such as flag etiquette, and color guard for school sporting events, just to name a few.
It is understood that some of you may work odd shifts and that can be advantageous, since some funerals and events happen earlier in the day. If you are interested in doing any of these things, please contact us at one of the following:
The VFW Post meeting is at Hawg Dawgs in downtown Savanna at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. Come on down. If you have been deployed and are qualified, we would love to have you. If not, other veteran organizations could use you for the same reasons, for instance Mount Carroll, Savanna and Thomson all have American Legion posts.
Thank you for your time and looking forward to your communications. If you please, you could send us digital contact information like email, cell phone, and social media as contact so we don’t have to use “snail mail” and can be more efficient. Thank you again.
