Dear Editor:

It is with great regret that I send this message out to all those individuals of our Mount Carroll community who enjoy the presentation and celebration of Memorial Day each year at the West Carroll Middle School, the Courthouse Square, the Galena Street Bridge and, of course, the Oak Hill Cemetery.

In accordance with rules mandated by the governor of the state of Illinois that will be enforced till May 30, we will not be holding Memorial Day gatherings on Monday, May 25.

This year will be celebrated a lot differently, with being socially distant, masked in public places and six-foot "free" zones around each of us, all thanks to the coronavirus pandemic that has besieged our world.

Let it be known that although we will not have the aforementioned activities taking place this year, the Mount Carroll American Legion Post 67 will still fall out en masse to raise the American flags up in the downtown area and also post flag markers in five different cemeteries in the local area, as per normal, prior to the holiday.

We will never forget our fallen comrades in arms and all they sacrificed on the battlefields of the world in the name of freedom.

Please remember on this Memorial Day that, “All Gave Some; Some Gave All” in securing Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in this Nation.

Have a blessed and safe Memorial Day, be well and take care of each other, always.

Richard Ottens

Commander

American Legion Post 67
