West Carroll runner Briar Nevills qualified for this weekend’s Oregon Sectional after a second place finish Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Class 1A Rock Falls Cross Country Regional.
The junior harrier ran the three-mile course at Centennial Park in 15:48. Dawson Smith of Rock Falls won the individual title in 15:07.
"Briar ran such a smart race," said Findlay. "He got into a pack of three runners and then started to make his move early. His last 800 was amazing. He knew the course and did a great job of moving into second in the last 400 meters with a strong finish."
Other West Carroll runners were Luke Reiland, 40th, 18:12; Jackson Lambert, 96th, 21:23; and Brennon Cavanagh, 98th, 21:31.
"Luke finished his career strong,” said Findlay. “He did everything he could to advance to sectionals but was just short. He couldn't have run a better race. "
West Carroll only had four runners and didn't compete as a team.
"It was a bitter-sweet race for our boys’ team," said coach Travis Findlay. "We were short runners due to injury and absence so we weren’t able to qualify as a team. I was so impressed with the attitudes of our boys; they still looked to compete.”
Nevills runs in the Oregon Sectional Saturday, Nov. 2, at Park West. The top five teams and the top seven finishers not on a qualifying team advance to the state finals.
If Nevills finishes in the top 10 overall he would advance to the state finals on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
In the Class 1A Winnebago Regional, Eastland-Milledgeville had two individuals qualify for this Saturday’s Oregon Sectional. Stephen Reifsteck finished in 15:23 and Jayden Day finished in 15:52.
