West Carroll senior linebacker Devon Murray has been named to the 2017 Class 2A All-State team by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

A captain on the 2017 Thunder squad that advanced to the second round of the 2A playoffs and ended the season with a 7-4 record, Murray had 151 tackles on the season (75 solos and 76 assists), six quarterback sacks, eight tackles for a loss, and two fumble recoveries. He was a lineman on offense.

Murray also is a unanimous selection as a linebacker on the 2017 Northwest Upstate Illini All Conference first team. He was named to the NUIC first team as a linebacker in 2016.

"Devon has had a great career at West Carroll," said Thunder head coach Matt Leitzen. "He is a three-year starter on defense at linebacker and has certainly left his imprint within the program."

"I believe his selection to the all-state team is a first for West Carroll football," added Coach Leitzen. "This recognition is well deserved and a result of the hard work both Devon and his teammates have put in. Without their discipline on the defensive side of the ball, Devon would not be allowed to play the way he does."

Murray, 17, (5-foot-9, 185 lbs.) plans to play college football while pursuing a degree in business and marketing. He has not decided where he will be attending college.

"I am very proud and happy to see that the hard work Devon put in has paid off with this great accomplishment and look forward to watching him play college football," said Coach Leitzen.

Murray is the son of James and Jennifer Haas and Craig and Morgan Murray.

The NUIC-Northwest also had four players named to the 2017 1A All-State team: Rahveon Valentine and Ian Kuehl of Lena-Winslow, AJ Christensen of Forreston and Maverick McPeek of Dakota.
