The West Carroll Sports Boosters have purchased a new wrestling mat with donations received from the community.

During the Wednesday, May 16, West Carroll School Board meeting, Laura Shelly reported that the Sports Boosters, with the help of Andrew Doty, have raised $8,350 for a third wresting mat, which will arrive in July.

Shelly said the third mat will relieve some of the wear and tear on the other mats. Sports Boosters also hope it will bring more tournaments and regionals to the schools, Shelly said, adding that from now on at wrestling events, they can have three mats in use at the same time.

Contributors to the purchase of the new mat include both the high school and middle school Sports Boosters, Mount Carroll Home Center, Andrew Doty, the Vipers Wrestling Club and the Lightning Wrestling Club, as well as donations from volunteer coaches, parents and alumni throughout West Carroll and Eastland area.

Shelly added that all of the money raised by the Sports Boosters goes directly back into West Carroll sports. The group is always looking for more active members.

"The Sports Boosters would like to remind everyone that we are a volunteer organization that could really use help throughout the school year," Shelly said.

She asked the district and the three schools to help spread the word by sharing the group's posts of meetings and events on Facebook, websites and by word of mouth.

Shelly also reported that the middle school currently has 35 girls signed up for volleyball for next year. She has ordered more uniforms to accommodate those numbers, using funds she has collected throughout the years for fifth/sixth volleyball.
