PEARL CITY—West Carroll Middle School 7th grader Aubrey Charles placed second in the 36th annual Regional Spelling Bee held Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Pearl City High School.

Charles is the daughter of Terry and Christy Charles of Mount Carroll.

First place went to Caroline Otto, an 8th grader from the Northern Illinois Christian Home Educators.

There were 26 participants representing the first and second place winners from area schools.

Other Carroll County participants included Sadie Collins of West Carroll, Vanessa Guerrero and Bruce Schlueter of Eastland, and Ashlin Bellows and Hannah Foster of Chadwick-Milledgeville.

In round 19, Otto correctly spelled "phenomenon.” Charles was next and misspelled "Geronimo." Otto went on to spell "dyslexia" correctly to win the regional spelling bee. She won multiple prizes from Scripps and the Regional Office of Education #8, which sponsored the event.

The Regional Office of Education #8 and area sponsors will pay to send Otto and one guardian to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May at Washington D.C.
